OSCAR NOMINATIONS 2015 OVERVIEW

2/3/2015

I'm going to start out with this: No one thought I was right, since November, when I said Gyllenhaal wouldn't be nominated. Everyone disagreed. So I was not one of the people who got angry when Gyllenhaal got "snubbed". It was a fine performance, but the Academy isn't going to nominate a performance like that. I'm shocked that Whiplash is adapted, but since Chazzelle based it off his own short, it falls into the category. I'm glad it's getting a nod for the four things I expected: Editing, Picture, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay. I REALLY, REALLY hope The Grand Budapest Hotel can rally in Best Original Screenplay over Birdman, and I'm glad they are the two Oscar frontrunners; they are the best two movies of the year. My 3rd favorite is probably Whiplash, but as expected, it didn't earn enough buzz for other categories. I am shocked that The Lego Movie was out of the race for Animated Feature, that's a mistake. The Boxtrolls didn't seen deserving. Glad that Kaguya got a nod, though. Selma took some damage: only two noms. Was expecting DuVernay for Director, but like A Most Violent Year, it came out too late for consideration. I expected Oyelowo and Cooper, but those are the two movies preventing me from my best of year list for not seeing them, so I'll have to assess the performances myself. All in All, a good Oscar year. I like 8 nominees for Best Picture, let's bring it down to 5 or 6! Truly and Honestly Birdman should win, but it'll go to Boyhood and you know it. If not, Birdman or The Imitation Game. Maybe Theory Of Everything, but it's a stretch. I'll have my full predictions up soon!
