#3: WHIPLASH
Intense, exciting, empowering, WHIPLASH is as vibrant and electric as they get. The experience of watching this is joyful beyond belief. After flaw-ridden films like "Grand Piano", Chazzelle has truly shown efforts of fantastic sophomore filmmaking. There isn't a single wasted moment in this film--the timing is all right. Just give JK Simmons an Oscar already. This film does give you memories of R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, and I love this character type. Hopefully now Simmons' agent's phone and E-mail will be blowing up with requests, because this is an Oscar-worthy performance. The hard-hitting aspect of this film is really the editing. Quick cuts and sharp angles accompany this film like no other. It is a true marvel to witness. The screenplay is strong, the acting is very well done, the cinematography and music are acceptable, and the entire movie is crafted to keep you entertained without gunshots or explosions (but SPOILERS SPOILERS maybe a car crash). With a story like this told in a brilliant narrative, it's hard for a movie like WHIPLASH to fail.
